What Drew Me In?

While I was searching for a capstone placement, I was specificly looking for health research serving diverse communities.  One evening I was scrolling accross my Facebook feed, and I saw post by one of my friends and former colligues. Betsy Robertson, Communications Directore for the American Red Cross PNW.

The American Red Cross, was highlighting her deployment as she was deployed to respond to California to respond to the devistating impact of the wild fires that struck this past winter. I was imediately inspired. The American Red Cross serves a diverse community from a wide verity of diverse backgrounds, and socioeconomic cercomstances.

In Betsys's post, she added a small leading line: "I have a pritty cool job." and I imediatly reached out. Betsy, gave me the name of their HR Manager, and I connected that evening on LinkedIn, and the rest is history!

Durring My Volunteer Capstone:

I worked with an amazing team of skilled experts who oversease connecting blood drive events for all the Westrin-Washington region, scheduling and booking experts, saftey team, HR, and many more.  I partipated in online training and continuing education. I worked independantly conducting research for likely future parteners, conducted strategic community outreach and communication efforts building new partnership connections and connect new blood drive events, who will likely continue to host other future blood drive events.  These partners were unique in the way that they had wider and greater access to a larger community network of diverse community members, both inner network and outter network, each site will also utalize a combined approach to inclusion.  Each site is ADA accessiable, with plenty of parking and within 1-2 blocks to metro transit.
  • Example: Municiple partners serving as co-host value their partnershps with business and the community, and serving the public good. Blood donation drives at City Hall locations will include staff and faculity, police and fire, and utalize department challenges and Health Wellness hours to boost involvment.  They will also include community and businesses.

  • Example: College Locations will consider simular efforts along with staff/facluty/ and student involvment.

  • Example: Larger King County Public Librarys, serve a diverse community audience. Site locations serve nearby community with good foot traffic, and also open to the public

  • Battle of the Badges Challenge: Is a compitition between police and fire, which is very popular amongst our emergcy frontline workers. Municiple sites and librarys are good neutral locations for adding this layered approach to increasing blood donation.

Technology: I used a laptop computer to conduct research, Microsoft 365: for community outreach emails, seting up Teams Virtual Meetings and reminders, follow-up post meeting notes, tracked my work progress with Excell by creating a workbook I will eventual pass along followig the compleation of my capstone to the American Red Corss.

Supervisor Check-in's: Occured weekly, and lasted for 30min to 45 minutes, sometimes less. It was an opperunity to get on the same page, track sucesses, pivit, stratergize, debrief and prepare for next steps.

New Partner Stakholder Relationships: During inital outreach, I included meeting options, information on what to expect, and fun facts including facts about sickle cell, making booking that meeting much easer to do.  During meetings, each meeting touched upon the ongoing need for blood donation, sickle cell match treament and ease of convience. After inital meetings, follow-up site visits would occure. I would help pre-schedule these and attended a few site saftey visits and walkthrough's learning and growing from the process.  These site visits are a critical step to ensure everyones saftey, and comfort.

Projects: Included hosting a tabling event, and producing social media communication campign for Sickle cell and Pride.

Reports: I provided a nuber of reports, post meeting reports, meeting minutes, post site visit, and post event reporting.
